In a recent interview on Asempa FM, George Afriyie, the former Vice President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), expressed his admiration for Kwesi Appiah’s contributions to the national team. Afriyie emphasized the significance of Appiah’s experience and the strong technical team he assembled during his tenure.

“Kwesi Appiah should be credited for the good job he has done,” Afriyie stated. He highlighted the positive impact of the talented players Appiah had at his disposal when Kurt Okraku was elected as GFA president.
He acknowledged that Appiah’s experience, particularly his role as a deputy under two Serbian coaches, made him a suitable candidate for the job.
Afriyie noted a notable achievement: “He even masterminded Ghana’s 6-1 win over Egypt to qualify us for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.”
Reflecting on the challenges Appiah faced during the 2014 World Cup, Afriyie pointed out that the circumstances were beyond Appiah’s control, attributing some failures to the then-Sports Minister’s shortcomings.
He claimed that upon Okraku’s ascension to the GFA presidency, he preferred to part ways with Appiah, even convincing President Akufo-Addo to dismiss him.

Now, with the Black Stars struggling in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers, Afriyie suggested that the current situation has come full circle. “When Kwesi Appiah met Ghana in the AFCON qualifiers, it was a payback time, and he has done that wonderfully well,” he asserted.
