AFCON Heartbreak: Sudan’s Victory Ends Ghana’s Journey to 2025 Tournament

Ghana has been officially knocked out of the qualification race for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) after a disappointing 2-0 loss to Sudan.

The match took place at the Martyrs of February Stadium in Libya, where Ghana’s performance fell short of expectations, sealing their fate and ending their journey to the continental tournament set to be hosted in Morocco.

In a match that carried high stakes, Ghana dominated possession with 58%, but failed to make their control of the ball count.

Despite making 336 passes with a 75% pass accuracy rate, they could only muster one shot on target from seven attempts. In contrast, Sudan, with only 42% possession and 261 passes, were more clinical, registering five shots on target out of their 11 total shots.

The two decisive moments of the game came in quick succession during the second half. Sudan’s Ahmed Hamed Mahmoud Mohamed broke the deadlock in the 62nd minute, followed closely by a second goal just three minutes later, scored by Mohamed Abdelrahman Yousif Yagoub in the 65th minute.

Ghana’s struggles were compounded by their inability to capitalize on set pieces, with four corners to their name but no breakthroughs, while Sudan’s defence remained resolute throughout.

The Black Stars’ frustration was evident as they committed 17 fouls and received four yellow cards, in contrast to Sudan’s 14 fouls and three yellow cards.

This defeat leaves Ghana stranded in third place in Group F with just two points after four games, while Sudan’s victory propels them to second place with seven points, keeping their AFCON dreams alive. Angola leads the group with a perfect record of nine points from three matches, while Niger lags behind at the bottom with just one point from three games.

The outcome is a major blow to Ghanaian football, especially considering the nation’s rich history in the AFCON tournament. For fans and players alike, missing out on the 2025 edition will be hard to digest, particularly after such a hard-fought qualification campaign that ultimately ended in heartbreak.

Ghana will now look ahead to regroup and rebuild, but for now, their focus will turn away from AFCON and toward other upcoming fixtures in the international football calendar.
