Former Black Stars captain Asamoah Gyan has stirred conversation within Ghanaian football circles after passionately defending former Ghana Football Association (GFA) President Kwesi Nyantakyi during an Instagram live session on Thursday.
Gyan alleged that Nyantakyi’s removal from office was orchestrated by individuals with selfish motives, and he attributed the decline of Ghanaian football to this very sabotage.
“When Nyantakyi was the GFA president, look at where Ghana football was,” Gyan began, his tone a mixture of frustration and nostalgia.
“Nyantakyi was never the kind of person who allowed internal bickering. He wouldn’t accept selfish agendas.”

The former footballer, affectionately known as “Baby Jet,” did not mince words as he highlighted Nyantakyi’s leadership qualities.
According to Gyan, Nyantakyi’s steadfastness against self-serving interests made him a target. “If someone came to him with selfish reasons, he wouldn’t accept it. That’s why they wanted him out,” he asserted.
Nyantakyi, who led the GFA for 13 years, was forced to step down in 2018 after being implicated in a high-profile corruption exposé.
While the revelations sparked widespread reform calls, Gyan believes the aftermath has been far from beneficial.
“Since his removal as GFA president, have you seen what has become of Ghana football?” Gyan questioned, pointing to the current state of the sport, which has faced criticism for inconsistent performances and administrative challenges.
Gyan’s comments tap into a larger conversation about leadership in Ghana football.
During Nyantakyi’s tenure, Ghana experienced notable achievements, including three consecutive FIFA World Cup appearances (2006, 2010, and 2014) and a strong reputation on the African continent.
