It’s been over a decade since that fateful night in South Africa, yet the pain of Ghana’s missed opportunity at the 2010 FIFA World Cup still lingers.
Now, Asamoah Gyan, the man at the centre of it all, has broken his silence with raw and unfiltered emotions, laying bare his frustrations in a viral Instagram Live session.
The world remembers Gyan as the man who stepped up to take a penalty that could have sent Ghana into history as the first African team to reach the World Cup semifinals.
But what Ghanaians didn’t see was the turmoil within the team.

“Anyone could have taken the penalty,” Gyan began, his voice rising with emotion. “Why would I deliberately miss it and disgrace Ghana? Everyone else was scared. You were all cowards,!” Gyan said in a live session on Instagram.
For the first time, Gyan directly challenged claims that he selfishly took the penalty.
“And then someone said they wanted to take it, but I did instead. Why don’t they speak up now? You all stayed quiet and let the insults come my way. I was the first-choice penalty taker—own up to the truth!”
The pain of betrayal was evident as Gyan described the aftermath.
“The fans had their say, and that’s fine. But you, my teammates, you should have defended me. Instead, you stayed silent, happy to let me face it alone.
“Some of you even encouraged people to attack me. I carried the love of the people, but you turned them against me.”
The moment Gyan referred to is etched in Ghana’s collective memory: Uruguay’s Luis Suárez stopping a sure goal with a handball, the red card, and the missed penalty that followed. What could have been Africa’s crowning football achievement became a heartbreak shared by millions.
