Sacking Coaches Isn’t Working: CK Akonnor Advocates for Continuity in Black Stars

Former Black Stars coach, Charles Kwabla (CK) Akonnor, has called for a new approach to coaching in the national football team, emphasizing the need for continuity regardless of short-term results.

In an interview on Angel FM, Akonnor highlighted the importance of giving coaches sufficient time to implement their strategies and build a strong foundation for future success.

“I’m looking at how long we can keep a coach so that the coach can have an impact on exactly what he wants to do.

Whether we win or lose, there should be some continuity,” Akonnor explained, pointing out that the frequent sacking of coaches has not yielded the desired results for Ghanaian football.

Akonnor reflected on Ghana’s track record of parting ways with coaches after poor performances, a pattern that has left the team with little opportunity for long-term growth.

He suggested that the nation should consider a different direction, one that allows a coach to develop and execute their vision over time. “As a nation, we must all come together and see it that way,” he urged.

Drawing comparisons with Senegal, Akonnor cited their national coach’s journey, noting that while the Senegalese coach struggled initially, the decision to stick with him eventually paid off.

“If you look at the Senegal coach when they picked him, he didn’t do well from the beginning, [but] after a while, we saw the results,” Akonnor remarked, referring to Senegal’s eventual rise as one of the top footballing nations in Africa.

His comments come at a crucial time for Ghana’s Black Stars, as the team faces significant pressure to perform in the upcoming AFCON qualifiers.

The country has seen several coaching changes in recent years, leaving many fans and stakeholders wondering if a more consistent approach could bring about the success that has long eluded the team.

Akonnor’s message is clear: short-term setbacks should not automatically lead to the dismissal of a coach.

Instead, he advocates for patience and unity in giving coaches the time they need to build a winning team. For Akonnor, this shift in mindset could be key to unlocking Ghana’s potential in international football.
