Faisal Chibsah, a renowned FIFA high-performance specialist, has voiced his concerns about the Black Stars’ lack of passion and commitment during their disappointing 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) campaign in Ivory Coast.
The Black Stars had high hopes of bouncing back after a dismal performance in the 2021 tournament in Cameroon, where they failed to make it past the group stage. However, their 2023 AFCON journey ended similarly, with the team finishing the group stage with only two points from three matches.
In a candid interview with Sporty FM, Chibsah shared his frustrations, attributing the team’s underperformance to a lack of desire to compete. He described the Black Stars under head coach Chris Hughton as playing without enthusiasm or purpose.
“A team with no desire, no commitment, and no adaptability – it seemed like they were playing just to be there,” Chibsah remarked. “They passed the ball around aimlessly, almost as if they were forced to participate in the tournament.”

Chibsah went on to express that the issues within the team were far deeper than just technical shortcomings. “I have followed the team, and the problems seem much bigger than tactical,” he added.
The Black Stars’ struggle continued beyond the AFCON, as their failure to qualify for the 2025 AFCON tournament only worsened their woes. Despite expectations, the team finished at the bottom of Group F in the qualification rounds, securing just three points from six matches.
In response to the team’s underperformance, Chris Hughton was replaced by Otto Addo on a three-year contract. But with the Black Stars continuing to face challenges both on and off the pitch, the road ahead looks uncertain as they search for answers to reignite their spirit and improve their standing in African football.
