GFA Divided Over Otto Addo’s Future as Black Stars Head Coach

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) finds itself grappling with internal disagreements over the future of Black Stars head coach Otto Addo.

This comes amid growing criticism of his leadership following a series of lacklustre performances by the national team. Speaking to Joy FM, GFA Communications Director Henry Asante-Twum shed light on the debates within the Executive Council, revealing that some members doubt Addo’s ability to lead the team through upcoming challenges like the World Cup qualifiers and future tournaments.

“There were members who argued that they do not believe he [Otto Addo] is the right man to take the team to the next level,” Asante-Twum stated.

The concerns stem from Addo’s recent poor record, with the Black Stars failing to win any of their last six matches. For a nation that prides itself on its footballing legacy, such a record has become a cause for alarm.

Asante-Twum did not shy away from voicing the frustrations within the council, adding, “If you play six matches and are unable to win a single one, then what is the point? We have to move on without him.”

Despite the criticism, Addo has his defenders. Asante-Twum acknowledged that some council members believe the head coach still has the potential to succeed if given the right support.

According to him, these members suggest assembling a strong management team to work closely with Addo and provide the resources needed to improve the team’s performance.

“There were those who thought, based on the factors he presented, we could put a strong team together to work with him, form a new management team, and provide all the necessary support for him to succeed,” Asante-Twum explained.

The debate highlights the precarious position the GFA faces as it seeks to navigate between short-term results and long-term development.

Addo, who took over after Ghana’s disappointing Africa Cup of Nations campaign in 2021, initially brought hope by leading the Black Stars to qualify for the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

However, that optimism has since faded, with many questioning his tactical approach and team selection.
