Asamoah Gyan, Ghana’s all-time leading scorer and former Black Stars captain, has been vocal in defending former Ghana Football Association (GFA) President Kwesi Nyantakyi.
In an emotional live Instagram session on Thursday, Gyan passionately accused certain factions within the football establishment of sabotaging Nyantakyi’s leadership, resulting in a significant decline in Ghana football’s stature.
Nyantakyi, who served as GFA president from 2005 until 2018, was also appointed Vice President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), elevating Ghana’s influence on the continental stage.

Under his leadership, the country enjoyed notable successes, including qualification for multiple World Cup tournaments and consistent appearances in the Africa Cup of Nations.
“Nyantakyi was leading us somewhere,” Gyan stated during his emotional rant. “He became CAF Vice President, one of the strongest people in African football. But because he wouldn’t entertain their selfish interests, they sabotaged him. They found a way to remove him from his role.”
Gyan’s remarks come in the wake of Nyantakyi’s controversial exit from his position in 2018 after a scandal broke involving allegations of corruption and misconduct.
The scandal, which stemmed from a sting operation led by undercover journalists, saw Nyantakyi resign from his position at the GFA and his CAF vice presidency.
But for Gyan, the situation is far from straightforward. “People didn’t agree with how Nyantakyi was leading, but the truth is he was doing well,” Gyan continued. “Look at where Ghana football was under his leadership, and look at it now. It’s clear who the problem was.”
