Sudan’s head coach, James Kwesi Appiah, has set his sights on lifting the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) trophy as he leads the team into the tournament under extraordinary circumstances.
The Ghanaian tactician, whose calm leadership has brought a spark to Sudanese football, guided the team to qualify for the prestigious competition despite the challenges posed by the nation’s ongoing civil war.
“Winning the trophy is my goal,” Appiah declared in the wake of Sudan’s qualification. “By God’s grace, we have qualified.
“We will prepare thoroughly to ensure we have a strong team before the AFCON. Once you’re in, you aim for the cup rather than coming out with nothing.”

This qualification is not just a milestone for Sudan but also a testament to Appiah’s resilience and tactical expertise.
The team had to play all their home matches in neutral venues due to the unrest in the country, a disruption that would challenge even the most seasoned sides.
Yet, under Appiah’s guidance, Sudan exhibited remarkable grit and discipline, earning their spot among Africa’s football elite.
Appiah, who previously led Ghana’s Black Stars to the 2014 FIFA World Cup, is no stranger to high-pressure tournaments. His experience and measured approach have been instrumental in building a cohesive Sudanese side capable of competing on the grandest stage.
“Nothing is impossible in football. No team should be underestimated,” he said, signaling his intent to take Sudan beyond the role of underdogs.
