Former Black Stars striker, Prince Tagoe, has weighed in on the ongoing debate surrounding the leadership of the national football team, offering his views on who should wear the captain’s armband.
In an interview with Angel FM, Tagoe emphasized the importance of seniority and experience when making decisions about the Black Stars’ captaincy, singling out Kudus Mohammed and Jordan Ayew as central figures in the conversation.

“You can’t give the captaincy to Kudus when Jordan is present in the team. You don’t do that,” Tagoe expressed firmly, stressing the need for hierarchy within the squad. “Kudus is a very good player, no doubt, but you need to be patient and allow his time to come before you give him the captaincy.”
Prince Tagoe’s remarks come at a time when discussions about the leadership dynamics in the Black Stars camp have been intensifying, especially as the team prepares for key matches in the upcoming AFCON and World Cup qualifiers.
Kudus Mohammed, the highly-rated attacking midfielder who has been delivering impressive performances for both club and country, has been widely praised for his abilities, but Tagoe believes that leadership on the national stage requires more than talent.
“Leadership is more than just being a great player on the field. It’s about timing, maturity, and earning the respect of your teammates over time,” Tagoe explained. “When you do it at the right time, you will feel the impact, and he will feel well.”
Tagoe also pointed out that rushing the decision could lead to unnecessary tension in the squad. “The confusion in the team takes its root from all those things and it’s the major problem we must tackle. We must look at the captaincy issue seriously,” he added.
Jordan Ayew, who has been a stalwart for the national team for years, has been seen as a natural leader given his experience and seniority.

Despite Kudus’ meteoric rise in football, Tagoe suggests that the team’s harmony depends on respecting the current structure and not forcing premature changes that could disrupt morale.
The conversation around who leads the Black Stars has been a recurring one, especially after the team’s inconsistent performances in recent tournaments. Many believe that finding the right leader could be crucial to their success in upcoming competitions.
As Tagoe concluded, “We want the best for the team. Kudus’ time will surely come, but for now, we need to maintain order and make decisions that benefit the entire squad.”
Tagoe’s comments highlight the delicate balance between fostering young talent and maintaining team cohesion through experienced leadership, a balance that could determine the Black Stars’ future fortunes.
