The tension surrounding the Black Stars has escalated recently, revealing deep-seated frustrations among the players regarding the Ghana Football Association (GFA) and its President, Kurt Okraku.
According to seasoned sports journalist Saddick Adams, a player disclosed to him that if the players knew the purpose of the address was to share the video for public consumption, they would have reacted differently.
Here are five key reasons driving their discontent:
1. Public Scolding
The players were taken aback when President Kurt Okraku publicly reprimanded them. Many felt that addressing the team in such a manner before a crucial game was inappropriate. Instead of motivating the players, this public scolding demoralized them, particularly in a high-stakes environment. The lack of private discussions about their performance left players feeling disrespected and undermined.
2. Social Media Backlash
Adding to the players’ frustrations was the decision to share Okraku’s address on social media. One player expressed that if they had known the meeting would be recorded and made public, their reactions would have been more confrontational—potentially leading to walkouts or protests against the president. This breach of trust not only exposed them to public criticism but also amplified their feelings of betrayal by their own leadership.
3. Need for Psychological Support
The players expressed a pressing need for psychological support rather than public admonishments. With the mounting pressure to perform, many believe that what they truly require is a psychologist to help boost their confidence and morale. Instead of being scolded, they feel they need someone who can provide individual support and encouragement, especially ahead of crucial matches, such as the upcoming game against Sudan.

4. Concerns About Team Management
The ongoing mismanagement within the Black Stars is contributing to the players’ dissatisfaction. Reports indicate that head coach Otto Addo is struggling without adequate support from the GFA. Many players believe this lack of backing is impacting their performance on the field. When players perceive a disconnect between the coaching staff and the federation, it creates an atmosphere of instability that can hinder team cohesion and success.
5. Qualification Woes
Currently, Ghana is teetering on the brink of missing out on the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) for the first time in twenty years, and this reality weighs heavily on the players’ minds. With only two points from four matches, the Black Stars find themselves in third place in Group F. The pressure is mounting as they need to win their last two matches and hope for favourable results in Sudan’s games. The uncertainty surrounding their qualification prospects adds to the players’ stress and frustration, making their recent grievances with the GFA even more significant.
