Former AS Roma manager, Jose Mourinho, has shed light on his relationship with African players, particularly his humorous interaction with Michael Essien.

The Portuguese coach, known for his success with African players, notably winning two UEFA Champions League titles with stars like Benni McCarthy and Samuel Eto’o, opened up about his rapport with players from the continent.

During his tenure at Chelsea, Mourinho worked closely with iconic African talents such as Didier Drogba, Michael Essien, and John Mikel Obi, who played pivotal roles in the team’s success.

Mourinho shared a light-hearted anecdote about Essien, revealing that he jokingly had to stop the Ghanaian midfielder from calling him ‘daddy’, humorously citing their close ages.

“To be honest, I love Africans and especially their players. The African player is very loyal. Some players call me ‘dad’, like Michael Essien, even though they are almost my age!” Mourinho remarked during an interview on Rio Ferdinand’s FIVE Podcast.

Mourinho’s affinity for African players has made him immensely popular on the continent. Reflecting on his experiences, he humorously mentioned that he now avoids visiting Africa due to the overwhelming support he receives from fans.

“It’s simple, I can’t go to Africa anymore! The supporters are crazy, everywhere!! I’ve coached Didier Drogba, Salomon Kalou, Samuel Eto’o, Michael Essien, Muntari, John Obi Mikel…I’ve had guys from all over Africa. Every time I go there, I can’t walk on the street. People love me so much! Even in Europe where there are a lot of Africans, they adore me,” Mourinho added.
