Ghana’s sports sector has seen brighter days, and President John Dramani Mahama knows it. That’s why, during the swearing-in of 17 ministers at the Jubilee House on Friday, he issued a direct challenge to the newly appointed Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams.
“Hon. Kofi Adams, I don’t envy your job. You have the monumental task of restoring Ghana to its pride of place in Africa and World sports.
“The shambles that are Ghana’s sports today are completely unacceptable for a country with our pedigree. And I expect that you inject transparency, professionalism, and modernity into the management of the sector,” Mahama stated.
His words carried the weight of history—Ghana was once a force to reckon with in sports, particularly in football. From the glorious AFCON-winning days to the Black Stars’ World Cup heroics, the nation built a reputation as a sporting powerhouse.

But recent years have been marked by stagnation, administrative turmoil, and underwhelming performances across various disciplines.
The president’s directive was clear: reform must start at the top. “I expect that you concentrate on building up all the sports disciplines, and I know the Ghana Football Association would be a good place to start to work to make sure that we return Black Stars to its glory days,” he added.
The GFA has faced intense scrutiny, with issues ranging from corruption scandals to inconsistent managerial decisions that have hindered the national team’s progress.
The once-feared Black Stars, who dazzled the world in 2010, have struggled to replicate that success, leaving fans yearning for a revival.
