Emby Anukwara, the Deputy Comptroller of the Nigerian Correctional Services (NCoS), has provided insight into the decision to assign Idris Okuneye, popularly known as Bobrisky, to a special cell during his time at Kirikiri Prison.
This explanation follows ongoing scrutiny regarding the circumstances of Bobrisky’s incarceration.
Anukwara revealed that upon Bobrisky’s arrival at the facility, it became apparent that he is transgender, prompting authorities to place him in a “privilege cell.”
He explained, “When Bobrisky was admitted on April 12, 2024, at approximately 10:30 PM, the necessary documentation could not be completed immediately. Given his unique situation regarding gender identity, we felt it was essential to act cautiously.”

He continued, “As a result, I made the decision to allocate him a single cell in the privileged ward to ensure his safety and well-being.
He was placed in P-ward room 2, and the following day, he underwent a medical examination where the doctors confirmed he had both male and female anatomical features.”
Anukwara’s comments came during a session with the House of Representatives investigative committee, which was probing allegations surrounding Bobrisky’s treatment in custody. Earlier this year, a Lagos court sentenced the controversial figure to six months in prison for the mutilation of naira notes, a serious offence.
However, after his sentencing, a social media activist known as Martins Ortse, or VeryDarkMan, released an audio recording claiming that Bobrisky did not serve his sentence at Kirikiri but rather stayed in a luxurious apartment due to the influence of a powerful associate.
In the recording, Bobrisky allegedly boasted about his preferential treatment, igniting public outrage and scepticism.
Despite these claims, Anukwara clarified that an investigation into the allegations found no credible evidence to support the idea that Bobrisky spent his jail term outside the prison.
“We have conducted thorough investigations, and the findings affirm that he remained in custody for the duration of his sentence,” Anukwara stated.
