An investigative panel formed by the Federal Government has concluded its examination into the circumstances surrounding the imprisonment of Idris Okuneye, popularly known as Bobrisky. The panel’s findings confirm that Bobrisky served a full six-month jail term at the Kirikiri Medium Security Custodial Centre in Lagos after being convicted for Naira abuse.

Chaired by Dr. Magdalene Ajani, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, the panel’s report dispelled rumours that Bobrisky had bribed Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) officials to serve his sentence in a private apartment rather than in prison.
“We found no evidence to support claims of bribery or special treatment,” stated Uju Agomoh, Executive Director and Founder of Prisoners’ Rehabilitation and Welfare Action (PRAWA), during a briefing at the Ministry of Interior in Abuja.
Bobrisky was sentenced on April 12 for violating regulations regarding the misuse of Naira notes and was released on August 5. The investigation was initiated by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, following allegations that emerged from a viral audio recording.
In this recording, social media activist Martins Otse, also known as VeryDarkMan, claimed that Bobrisky had paid off officials to have money laundering charges dropped.
In the audio, Bobrisky purportedly spoke of a “godfather” who, in league with Haliru Nababa, the Controller General of the NCoS, ensured that he spent his sentence outside of prison. In light of these serious accusations, the government swiftly established an investigative panel on September 30 to address allegations of corruption and misconduct within the NCoS.
Presenting the preliminary findings, Agomoh emphasized that the investigation found no proof that Bobrisky resided outside the custodial facility during his imprisonment.
“The panel did not find any evidence thus far that suggested that Mr. Okuneye slept outside the custodial centre during the period of his imprisonment, which was from April 12, 2024, to August 5, 2024,” she confirmed.

While the panel cleared Bobrisky of having served his sentence in a private location, it did note that he was afforded certain privileges during his incarceration. “His sentence included the usual remission applicable to inmates,” Agomoh added, highlighting the complexities surrounding his time in custody.
