Senegal’s national football team captain, Kalidou Koulibaly, has expressed confidence that the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) will go down in history as the best edition ever.

The reigning champions arrived in Cote d’Ivoire to defend their title, acknowledging the formidable challenge posed by top teams participating in the tournament.

The Lions of Teranga, based in Yamoussoukro for their Group C matches, anticipate a tougher journey to retain their title, given the presence of strong contenders in their group, including five-time winners Cameroon, The Gambia, and Guinea.

Senegal is recognized as a strong title contender, having reached two consecutive AFCON finals in 2019 and 2021. Speaking from the team’s camp, Kalidou Koulibaly emphasized the significance of the Côte d’Ivoire edition, highlighting the participation of all major African teams fully prepared for the competition.

“I think that the Côte d’Ivoire edition will be the best in the history of the competition because all the big teams are present and are fully prepared. It will show the true image of African football, and I think that whoever wins the title in the end will deserve it,” said Koulibaly.

The Senegal skipper called on the nation’s fans to rally behind the team and keep them in their prayers as they embark on the journey to defend the title against formidable African teams. He expressed confidence that the support of the Senegalese fans would propel the team to success and promised to represent them well.
