Award-winning Ghanaian journalist Gary Al-Smith has expressed his deep frustration over the current state of Ghana’s sports infrastructure, particularly its stadiums.
In a passionate Facebook post, Al-Smith highlighted the unprecedented situation in which none of the country’s major sports facilities are fit to host a Category A match.
“For the first time in 67 years and 4 Republics, we don’t have a ground fit to host a Category A match,” he wrote, emphasizing that for over two to three generations of Ghanaians, this level of deterioration has never been witnessed before.
While acknowledging that challenges are inevitable, Al-Smith voiced his disbelief that all the major sports facilities in the country have simultaneously fallen into disrepair, calling it a “Code Red” situation.
“At least, a few should be down while others are being worked on to reach Category A status is understandable. But, all?”
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) recently banned Ghana from hosting international matches at its main stadiums, a decision that has sent shockwaves across the country.
The news hit hard, especially for Ghanaian football fans, who take immense pride in the sport.
For the first time in the nation’s history, none of Ghana’s stadiums meet the standards required to host Category A matches, which include major international tournaments like the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) and World Cup qualifiers.
