I Will Ask Questions and Demand Answers – Nii Lante Vanderpuye on Accountability Amid CAF Ban

Former Minister of Youth and Sports, Nii Lante Vanderpuye, has weighed in on the recent ban imposed on Ghana by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) due to the poor state of pitches at various stadiums.

Speaking in an interview with ChannelOne Sports, Vanderpuye emphasized the need for accountability in government spending on sports infrastructure and promised that, if given the opportunity, he would not shy away from asking tough questions.

“Any facility that government and taxpayer money has been spent on will definitely be completed and used for the purpose for which it was constructed,” Vanderpuye stated, reinforcing the government’s responsibility to ensure that public funds are used effectively.

However, he was quick to add that there’s nothing wrong with investigating how those funds are spent. “There will be nothing wrong with government also probing to see whether money has been judiciously used for such things.

Where it is found that monies have not been used properly, appropriate measures will be taken to retrieve government money that has been wrongly spent. Where it’s been used judiciously, no problem.”

Vanderpuye, who served as the Minister of Youth and Sports, didn’t hold back on his stance regarding the need for transparency and accountability in such matters.

He further noted that should he ever find himself in a position of authority again, he wouldn’t hesitate to question his predecessor’s actions, especially if they’ve contributed to ongoing issues.

“If by the grace of God almighty, I find myself in a position where I need to ask certain questions and demand certain answers from my predecessor, I will do so. I don’t care who my predecessor was.

“I will do so because I will not inherit a problem for which I’m not the cause of, and I wouldn’t want to inherit a problem that I would not have answers for when I’m asked about it tomorrow,” he said firmly.

Vanderpuye’s comments come at a time when Ghana’s football community is facing scrutiny following the CAF ban, with calls growing for better maintenance of sports facilities across the country.

His remarks highlight the importance of holding officials accountable for their actions and ensuring that public funds are managed responsibly.
