Jerry Akaminko has revealed that the Black Stars players bathed with sachet water (pure water) after their historic 6-1 win over Egypt in the build-up to their third appearance at the 2014 FIFA World Cup, which was staged in Brazil.
The Black Stars had a shower with a sachet of water after their victory, according to Akaminko, who ascribed the unfortunate development to the poor playing conditions in Ghana and thought back on the struggles players had while he was a member of the Black Stars.
Akaminko recalled an instance in which the locker room taps were inoperable after Ghana’s convincing victory against Egypt in Kumasi. The players were forced to utilize a sachet of water for showering after the game as a result.
In an interview with Saddick Adams, Akaminko detailed the situation, stating, “There was no water to shower after our game against Egypt. They [the Egyptians] didn’t get water to shower. If our tap is not flowing, it means they also don’t have it. We used sachet water to shower.”
He explained that certain players who were uncomfortable with the circumstances had to postpone their showers until returning to the hotels.”If you prefer, you can wait until we reach the hotel before you shower. That was the only option,” Akaminko clarified.
Jeremiah Akaminko was a crucial part of Ghana’s squad that successfully secured qualification for the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil. Regrettably, a few days before the tournament, he suffered an injury that led to his exclusion from the final squad.
In that particular match, Asamoah Gyan scored a brace, Wael Gomaa scored an own goal, Majeed Waris, Sulley Muntari, and Christian Atu also put goals on the board, while Mohamed Aboutrika scored the consolation goal for Egypt.
Asamoah Gyan scored the first goal, and Wael Gomaa’s own goal following a run by Michael Essien made it 2-0. Mohamed Aboutrika of Egypt converted a penalty, but Majeed Waris and Gyan added goals with headers to make the score 3-1. Ghana gained complete control of the match thanks to a Sulley Muntari penalty and a late goal from Christian Atsu.
The game was expected to be the closest of the five African play-off matches that will determine who advances to the tournament in Brazil the following year.
