A tragic event has unfolded in the soccer community with the announcement of Juan Izquierdo’s passing, just days after he collapsed during a match in Brazil, as confirmed by his Uruguayan club and the governing body of South American football on Tuesday.
He was 27 years old.
The club, Nacional, expressed their sorrow on social media, stating that Izquierdo’s death has left them “in deep pain and impact in our hearts,” and that “all Nacional is in grief for his irreplaceable loss.”
CONMEBOL, the governing body for South American soccer, also paid tribute to Izquierdo, with president Alejandro Domínguez expressing his “deep sorrow over the untimely departure of Juan Izquierdo.”
Following his collapse during a Copa Libertadores match in Sao Paulo last Thursday, Izquierdo was transported to a hospital in Brazil.
Hospital Albert Einstein said in a statement that Izquierdo had “cardiorespiratory arrest associated with his cardiac arrhythmia.”
Juan Manuel Izquierdo made a total of 111 appearances in the Uruguayan Primera División while playing for clubs such as Cerro, Peñarol, Montevideo Wanderers, Liverpool, and Nacional.
He achieved league titles with Nacional in 2022 and with Liverpool in 2023. Additionally, he had a brief stint in Mexico’s Liga MX with Atlético San Luis in 2021.
Tragically, Izquierdo passed away at the age of 27 after suffering a cardiac arrhythmia during a Copa Libertadores match in São Paulo. Izquierdo had been diagnosed with arrhythmia a decade earlier while he was a member of the Atlético Cerro team.
This information was shared by Sebastián Bauzá, Uruguay’s national secretary of sport, during his appearance on the ‘Minuto 1’ program on Carve Deportiva radio this past Monday.
