England’s trophy drought continues as Spain defeated them 2-1 in the finals of the UEFA Euro 2024 held in Germany.
The match was tied at 1-1 and seemed headed for a draw with the possibility of extra time, but Spain’s substitute Mikel Oyarzabal scored an 86th-minute winner, securing a 2-1 victory for his team and their record fourth European crown.
Nico Williams first gave Spain the lead at the start of the second half, and although La Roja had opportunities to extend their lead, England’s substitute Cole Palmer provided them with a lifeline.
Oyarzabal then sealed the win with a breakaway goal, leading Spain to victory after winning all seven games in the tournament.
After a cautious first half where Spain had more possession and England had the only shot on target, the Spaniards broke the deadlock just two minutes into the second half.
Teenager Lamine Yamal created space down the right and assisted fellow winger Nico Williams for the opening goal.
England, who fell behind for the fourth consecutive game in the tournament, managed to level the score in the 73rd minute through substitute Cole Palmer.
