Former Ghanaian football captain Stephen Appiah has taken to Instagram to express deep gratitude towards a couple who played a pivotal role in launching his illustrious career.
In an emotional post, Appiah thanked Ataa Agoe and Sister Aryeekaa, the individuals who gifted him his very first pair of football boots, a gesture that would become the foundation of his football journey.
“I wouldn’t be where I am today without you,” Appiah wrote, recalling the profound impact their support had on his life.
“Your support came at a time when I needed it most. Your care and that first pair of boots will always be part of my story.” The heartfelt message was a reminder that behind the global fame and success of the former Black Stars captain lies a story rooted in community and generosity.
Appiah, known for his humility and dedication, has always been candid about the struggles he faced growing up in Chorkor, a coastal neighbourhood in Accra, where opportunities were limited.
His talent on the field was apparent from a young age, but financial difficulties meant that even basic necessities like football boots were beyond his reach.
It was during this challenging time that Ataa Agoe and Sister Aryeekaa stepped in, providing him with the boots that would become symbolic of the start of his football dream.
“Those boots weren’t just shoes, they were the start of my dream,” he continued in his post, acknowledging the significance of their gift.
Appiah’s football career eventually took him to international heights, playing for clubs like Juventus and Fenerbahçe, and leading the Ghana national team to its first World Cup appearance in 2006.
Yet, through it all, he has never forgotten the early days and the people who helped him along the way.
