During an interview with Nana Romeo on Accra FM, Pope Skinny brought to light pressing issues within Ghana’s music industry, emphasizing the struggles artists face in a system that prioritizes hit songs over sustainability.
His remarks resonate with many in a sector where financial stability can often feel elusive.
Pope Skinny highlighted a stark reality in the industry: “If you don’t have a hit song, you’ll go hungry.”

This statement reflects a pervasive pressure on artists to consistently produce chart-topping tracks to survive financially.
The pressure to create hits can stifle creativity, as artists may feel compelled to conform to mainstream expectations rather than explore innovative sounds or personal expressions.
Further complicating this landscape is the lack of social security contributions for artists, an issue that Pope Skinny argues exacerbates the struggles musicians face.
“Our social security contributions are not made,” he lamented, illustrating a system that neglects the welfare of its creative talents.
In a country where many artists pour their hearts and souls into their craft, the absence of a safety net leaves them vulnerable to financial instability.
Pope Skinny expressed his frustration with leaders who overlook the welfare of artists, suggesting that many may feel compelled to pursue jobs outside their passion.
“Since the leaders don’t really think about our welfare in this country, we’ll leave and go do jobs that may be below us – at least no one will see us doing it,” he remarked.
More importantly, Pope Skinny expressed frustration over the ban on celebrity endorsements of alcoholic beverages in Ghana, calling it “senseless.”
“The ban doesn’t make sense,” he added.
The ban, issued by the Food & Drugs Authority (FDA) in 2015, prohibits popular figures from endorsing alcohol, a directive that the Supreme Court later upheld when talent manager Darlington Osae challenged it.
Pope Skinny argued, “Alcohol-dealing companies have been very helpful to the entertainment industry in Ghana in recent years,” adding that they have organized some of the biggest shows and provided lucrative endorsement deals to creatives, including musicians like himself.
