Stealing Sardines and Money Led to My Expulsion in JHS 2—Showboy Opens Up

Ghanaian socialite and rapper Samuel Safo, widely known as Showboy, has opened up about his troubled past and struggles with mental health in an emotionally charged interview on the Delay Show.

Speaking with Deloris Frimpong Manso on November 23, 2024, Showboy recounted the challenges he faced as a young boy and the drastic measures he might have resorted to if financial success had eluded him.

During the interview, Showboy reflected on being expelled from school in JHS 2 after being caught stealing. “In JHS 2, I was sacked from school in John Teye because I stole from someone. I used to steal things like money, sardines, and others.

It all started when I used to steal from my grandmother, but she didn’t punish or talk me out of it,” he revealed.

The absence of correction from his grandmother, he believes, fueled his behaviour, which could have spiralled into darker outcomes.

“If God hadn’t blessed me with money, I would have become an armed robber because I am passionate about making money by all means,” he added, highlighting how his desperation for financial security shaped his early mindset.

After serving prison time in the United States, Showboy described the shock of returning to Ghana, where he was greeted with a display of wealth.

“When I came back from prison, the first thing I saw at the airport was young boys driving Range Rovers,” he noted.

This moment, he said, emphasized how society often equates success with material possessions, further fueling his determination to amass wealth.

Showboy also shared insights into his battle with loneliness and mental health issues, admitting that his pet dog plays a significant role in helping him cope.

“This dog is especially for mental health purposes. It is closer to me because I don’t want loneliness. I have been lonely for a long time,” he said.

He described hearing voices and struggling with irritability, explaining that marijuana helps calm his mind.

“If not for the weed I smoke, which calms me down, sometimes I feel like stabbing someone’s stomach. Human beings irritate me, so the dog plays a huge role in my life.”
