Essien shared insights about his journey and experiences in European football.
Reflecting on his background, Essien credited his upbringing in Sekondi-Takoradi, a coastal city near Ivory Coast, for helping him connect with fellow Ivorians.
He noted that being around Ivorians at Chelsea and now in Denmark, at Nordsjaelland’s Farum Park, felt natural, especially since he speaks French, which bridges the gap.
Essien also touched on the importance of hard work in advancing a football career. He emphasized that while external factors might be similar for many players, success is largely driven by an individual’s desire and determination to elevate their game.
This mindset, according to Essien, has been crucial in his career trajectory.
Michael Essien moved to France in 2005 when he signed with Olympique Lyonnais (Lyon). He had previously played for Bastia in the French Ligue 1 before making the move to Lyon, where he became a key player and won several league titles.
His prowess on French soil eventually lured Chelsea to splash £24.4 million for his services in 2005, marking his entry into English football.
The move to Stamford Bridge made him the most expensive African footballer at the time. Essien went on to become a key figure under José Mourinho, winning Premier League titles and a UEFA Champions League trophy with Chelsea.
