Speak to the People in Pidgin So They Can Understand – Shatta Wale’s Plea to Dr. Bawumia

In a recent interaction between Ghanaian dancehall artist Shatta Wale and the Vice President of Ghana, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the artist raised pressing concerns about an often-overlooked section of the population—the marginalized youth and street dwellers.

Shatta Wale’s words, delivered with a sense of urgency, echoed the struggles of those left behind in society’s rapid development.

“I didn’t want to be here initially,” Shatta Wale began, setting the stage for a heartfelt and genuine appeal. “But I have a very big problem that I feel we can work out together.”

This sentiment reflects the frustration and desire for change felt by many who live on the fringes of society. Shatta Wale, a self-professed product of the streets, spoke for himself and the countless others who remain invisible to the wider world.

For him, the streets represent a community of individuals who, despite their talents and potential, are often neglected.

A critical point in his address was his acknowledgement of Dr. Bawumia’s efforts in job creation, tied to the campaign slogan “To lead is to solve.”

Shatta Wale recognized the significance of this initiative but was quick to challenge the government to take a deeper look at how their message reaches those struggling in the lower strata of society.

“These people are struggling on the streets… these are the fans that support all of us here,” he pointed out, highlighting the loyalty and contributions of the very people society often overlooks.

Shatta Wale’s request that Dr. Bawumia addresses these people in pidgin—a language widely spoken and understood by street dwellers—was not merely a stylistic suggestion.
