Spanish FA Reveals Why Barcelona’s ‘Ghost’ Goal Was Disallowed

Amid Barcelona’s demand for justice regarding their disallowed goal against Real Madrid during the weekend, which could have potentially influenced the outcome of the El Clasico in their favour, the Spanish FA (RFEF) has reached a verdict on the matter.

The FA has made public the audio recording from the VAR review, which asserts that Lamine Yamal’s shot against Real Madrid did not fully cross the goal line.

The RFEF has released the audio from the VAR review of Yamal’s controversial goal, commonly referred to as the ‘ghost goal’, where VAR official Sanchez Martinez can be heard informing the on-field referee Soto Grado that there is insufficient evidence to confirm that the ball completely crossed the goal line.

In the audio released by the RFEF, Martinez can be heard telling Grado: “There is no evidence that the ball has gone in.”

Barca, on the other hand, might not be completely content with the VAR audio revelation due to the absence of goal-line technology in La Liga, rendering any replay inconclusive.

The development comes after Barca president Joan Laporta lead the charge for a replay of the game following a controversial call by the referee.

Laporta issued a strong statement on Monday, stating that Barcelona will explore the possibility of a rematch after a contentious decision deprived them of a goal in the first half. Despite replays suggesting that Yamal’s shot may have crossed the line, the absence of goal-line technology in La Liga made it impossible to confirm.

The president was heard saying in a video thus: “Yesterday, there were several debatable plays but among all of them there is one that is essential and that can lead to a change in the final result of the game.

I am referring to the so-called Lamine ghost goal. As a club we want to be sure about what happened and that is why I inform you that from FC Barcelona we will immediately request the Technical Committee of Referees and the Spanish Football Federation to provide us with all the images and audio generated by the play.”
