Southampton have secured their return to the Premier League by defeating Leeds in the Championship playoff final held at Wembley Stadium in London.
The hero of the match was Adam Armstrong, whose goal in the first half proved to be enough to overcome a lacklustre response from Leeds.
Despite a late attempt by substitute Daniel James that hit the crossbar, Leeds struggled to find a meaningful breakthrough.
Southampton will now join Leicester City and Ipswich Town in the Premier League next season. Ipswich Town, after a 22-year absence from the top flight, earned their promotion, while Leicester City made an immediate return to the Premier League following their relegation last year.
Unfortunately for Leeds, their playoff misfortunes continue.
This marks the sixth time they have failed to secure promotion through the playoffs. Adding to their disappointment is the fact that Leeds finished third in the regular season, three points ahead of fourth-place Southampton, but missed out on automatic promotion after a poor run of form in their last six games.
“I think we probably didn’t play our best game today, but we showed a different side,” Southampton defender Jack Stephens said. “A few people have doubted us this season — can we defend, can we dig in? I think we showed we can.”
It was a third win against Leeds this season for Southampton, which has won their meetings home, away and now at Wembley.
