Municipal Chief Executive for Bawku, Hamza Amadu, confirmed the distressing incident, expressing concern over the potential for an increase in casualties. Authorities are expected to launch investigations to determine the motives behind this latest attack.

This unfortunate event follows a period of relative calm in the town lasting 48 hours.

Notably, on January 19, a bus carrying around 45 students from the Presbyterian Nurses Training College, Bawku, was targeted by two gunmen on motorcycles near Binduri in the Upper East region.

The attack resulted in multiple injuries among the students, who were promptly transported to the Bawku Presbyterian Hospital for medical attention.

The recent clash also harks back to the events of January 17, 2024, when unidentified gunmen attacked tricycle operators near the Bawku Community Centre, resulting in the deaths of two individuals. Subsequently, three more people were killed on January 18, reportedly shot by soldiers who claimed to have found firearms on them.

The Ghana Armed Forces defended their actions, emphasizing the need for self-defense in the face of perceived threats.
