During his appearance on the ‘Drink Champs’ podcast, co-hosted by N.O.R.E and DJ EFN, Buju Banton disclosed that he identifies as an Igbo man from Nigeria.
He elaborated that his tribe, the Maroons, has historical roots in the Igbo tribe of Nigeria, affirming his Igbo heritage.
Banton expressed concern over the current Jamaican government’s actions, which he believes are jeopardizing their Indigenous land by allowing Chinese and other foreign entities to encroach upon their territory.
He said, “Our Indigenous way of life and our land are being threatened by the current government of Jamaica which seeks to bring Chinese and other nationalities into the Cockpit region which is an Indigenous sacred region to usurp us the Maroons as the warriors.
“Maroons are some of the Indigenous warriors on my Island. We fought the British relentlessly. We are called Blackmaroons. My generation originated from Nigeria. I am an Igbo man according to my bloodline.”
According to Wikipedia, Maroons are descendants of Africans in the Americas and Islands of the Indian Ocean who escaped from slavery, through flight or manumission, and formed their own settlements.
They often mixed with indigenous peoples, eventually evolving into separate creole cultures such as the Garifuna and the Mascogos.
It is important to remember that it was on this particular show that the Reggae legend ignited significant controversy when he asserted that Afrobeats lacks depth, arguing that it does not possess the ability to stimulate the subconscious mind.
