Former Minister of Trade and Industry, Dr. Ekwow Spio-Garbrah, has called on President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to cancel the National Cathedral project in order to save the country money.

According to Spio-Garbrah, discontinuing the project would signify the government’s acknowledgment of the need to halt unfeasible initiatives.

He made these remarks during an upcoming interview with TV3’s Keminni Amanor when asked about the government’s target to achieve single-digit inflation by the end of the year, currently standing at 23.2%.

In response to a question about the Finance Ministry’s projection of achieving single-digit inflation, Spio-Garbrah stated, “If the president tells us that before he leaves office, he will never fly again in an $18,000 an hour plane, he hasn’t made that commitment, he should make it.”

He emphasized that if the government openly cancels the National Cathedral project, it would demonstrate a move toward fiscal responsibility by discontinuing unattainable projects.

“Have you heard that the National Cathedral project has been canceled? If you hear that the National Cathedral project has been canceled then it means that the government is getting into a sensible environment and canceling projects that they know will never happen this year under this government. So cancel it openly and let us know it is canceled,” he added.

Touching on the ’24-hour Economy’ proposal by former President John Dramani Mahama, Spio-Garbrah expressed support for the idea, stating that 54% of Ghanaians believe it is the most remembered policy slogan. He believes that implementing the 24-hour economy concept would enhance the local economy and create job opportunities.
