Self-Care Is Essential, People Will Forget You- Vim Lady

Afia Pokua, better known in the media world as Vim Lady, has opened up about her time away from the public eye and the invaluable lessons she’s learned from stepping back.

In an interview with Graphic Showbiz, the respected media professional spoke about the harsh realities of being forgotten once the spotlight dims, while also offering insightful reflections on career, family, and self-care.

“Being away from the media space these few years has given me a valuable perspective: out of sight, indeed, means out of mind,” she shared. “It’s a harsh reality check that people tend to forget about us when we’re no longer in their immediate circle.”

“One thing I can say is that if you take the wrong route because you want to always be in people’s faces, it will end badly. As professionals, we should know there is time for everything. Even if we go the extra mile to stay relevant, once our time is up, we are gone forever, and no one cares again.”

This profound wisdom is something many in the media industry struggle with—the constant need to stay relevant, to be seen and heard, often at the expense of personal well-being.

But for Afia Pokua, the last few years have been a journey of recalibration. She’s recognized the importance of stepping back when necessary, to protect her peace and sanity.

After all, relevance in the public sphere isn’t eternal, and trying to fight the inevitable can lead to burnout.

But beyond the conversation about career longevity, Afia also touched on a subject that’s close to her heart: the balance between career and family.

As someone who has fiercely advocated for better working conditions in the media space, she now realizes the need to prioritize personal fulfilment as well.

“Let’s not pit marriage and family against career. Instead, let’s strive for balance. While a fulfilling career can assure financial stability and personal growth, it’s the love and support of family that truly enriches life.”

For her, family provides an anchor in the stormy seas of life. She added, “A successful career can’t rescue you from life’s challenges, but a loving family can provide unwavering support. So, we should learn to maintain a balance between these two.”

Vim Lady’s reflections come from a place of personal growth. For years, she admits, her focus was primarily on fighting for others.

She tirelessly advocated for better working conditions, standing up for her colleagues and those in the media industry. But in doing so, she often neglected her own needs. “For years, I prioritised fighting for better conditions and advocating for others, neglecting my own needs in the process,” she confessed.

Yet, her time away has taught her that self-care is not selfish—it’s essential. “I’ve come to understand that self-care and self-prioritisation aren’t selfish; they’re essential in the media space because no matter what, you will be forgotten someday.”

These words are not just an observation about the media industry but a broader statement about life itself. In a world that moves at an ever-accelerating pace, people often forget those who once stood tall. It’s a tough pill to swallow, but as Afia notes, it’s better to accept this reality and focus on self-care and inner peace.

In closing, Vim Lady leaves us with a powerful takeaway: “It’s okay to take a step back. Life will go on, and people may forget, but what matters is that you remember to take care of yourself and cherish those who love you unconditionally. That’s where true happiness lies.”
