Two Sudanese players from Asante Kotoko, AbdoelKarem Yagoub and Esmat Al Hasan, have reportedly gone missing shortly after the team’s arrival in the United States for a ceremonial match against Major League Soccer side DC United.
This incident, which occurred at the team hotel in Washington, D.C., raises significant concerns about player welfare and the challenges athletes often face when traveling abroad.
According to reports from Nhyira FM, CCTV footage revealed that Yagoub and Al Hasan sneaked out of their hotel and were picked up by an unidentified car.
The players were part of a larger contingent that had been reduced to 18 members due to visa issues that plagued the team’s initial roster of 32 players.
Asante Kotoko’s management has expressed shock and disappointment over the players’ disappearance, emphasizing the emotional toll it takes on a team that has invested time and resources in preparing for this match.
The club is currently collaborating with local authorities and the Ghanaian embassy in the U.S. to locate the missing players, reflecting the serious nature of their concerns.
This incident occurred during Ghana Week DC 2024, a celebration organized by the Ghana Tourism Authority in collaboration with the Ghana Football Association.
The event aims to showcase Ghana’s rich culture and heritage in the U.S., but the players’ disappearance casts a shadow over what should be a joyous occasion.
The ceremonial match against DC United is meant to strengthen ties between the two nations and promote Ghanaian culture.
This is not the first time we’ve seen athletes abscond during overseas trips, particularly when opportunities for better living conditions and careers loom on the horizon.
Many players from African nations seek to capitalize on their talents, hoping to find a more stable future abroad.
