The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) of Nigeria has been at the forefront of combating financial crimes and corruption.

Over the years, several high-profile Nigerian celebrities have found themselves on the wrong side of the law, facing arrests and investigations by the EFCC.

This article delves into some of the most notable cases, highlighting the circumstances and outcomes of these arrests.

1. Naira Marley

Afeez Fashola, popularly known as Naira Marley, is one of the most prominent Nigerian musicians to be arrested by the EFCC. In May 2019, Naira Marley was arrested alongside fellow artist Zlatan Ibile and three others for alleged involvement in internet fraud and money laundering. The arrest came shortly after Naira Marley released a controversial song, “Am I A Yahoo Boy,” which many believed glorified cybercrime. He was later charged with 11 counts of fraud and was granted bail, but the case remains ongoing.

2. Zlatan Ibile

Omoniyi Temidayo Raphael, known as Zlatan Ibile, was arrested alongside Naira Marley in May 2019.  The EFCC detained them for their alleged connection to internet fraud and money laundering. Unlike Naira Marley, Zlatan was released on administrative bail after a few days, but the incident significantly impacted his public image and career.

3. Bobrisky

Idris Olanrewaju Okuneye, popularly known as Bobrisky, has had multiple run-ins with the EFCC.  In April 2024, Bobrisky was arrested for allegedly abusing naira notes by spraying money at a public event. This arrest was part of a broader crackdown on the abuse of the national currency.  Bobrisky’s legal troubles didn’t end there; she later filed a lawsuit against the EFCC and the National Assembly for alleged rights violations, seeking substantial damages.

4. Mompha

Ismaila Mustapha, better known as Mompha, is a social media celebrity and businessman who was arrested by the EFCC in October 2019.  Mompha was accused of laundering funds through his company, Ismalob Global Investments Limited. He faced charges of cyber fraud and money laundering involving billions of naira. Mompha’s case drew significant media attention due to his lavish lifestyle and high-profile social media presence.

5. D’banj

In December 2022, Nigerian music star D’banj, whose real name is Oladapo Daniel Oyebanjo, was arrested by the EFCC for alleged fraud involving the N-Power Programme. The anti-graft agency accused D’banj of diverting funds meant for the empowerment of Nigerian youths. He was detained for several days before being released on bail. The case is still under investigation, with D’banj maintaining his innocence.
