Cristiano Ronaldo narrowly escaped a potential danger when a fan attempted to approach him after Portugal’s 2-0 defeat to Georgia at the European Championship.
A video circulating on social media captured the moment when the fan jumped over the players’ tunnel at the Veltins Arena in Gelsenkirchen, Germany, as Ronaldo was leaving the field.
Fortunately, a steward quickly intervened to protect the former Real Madrid and Manchester United star, while other security personnel rushed towards the fan who disappeared.
Ronaldo, although surprised, seemed unharmed. The incident was confirmed by Portugal’s Football Federation, but no further comments were provided. UEFA, the governing body of European football, acknowledged the incident, while Gelsenkirchen police stated that it was not within their jurisdiction.
This incident followed a previous match against Turkey, where Ronaldo was approached by four fans who invaded the pitch for selfies.
Although he stopped for one young fan during that game, he appeared frustrated when approached by more fans later on.
Portugal coach Roberto Martinez expressed concerns about Ronaldo’s security and emphasized that he was fortunate not to have been harmed.
“We all love a fan that recognizes the big stars and the big icons in their minds,” Martinez said. “But you can understand it was a very, very difficult moment. If those intentions are wrong, the players are exposed and we need to be careful with that.”
UEFA have said safety and security in the stadium is the “ultimate priority” and that additional safety measures would be deployed to prevent selfie-seeking fans from entering the field.
