Richard Gutierrez Made Me Urinate Blood After Our Match – Joshua Clottey Shares Details

Ghanaian boxer Joshua Clottey believes that his fight with Richard Gutierrez was the toughest fight in his entire career after what happened to him immediately after the famous bout.

More than 10 years ago, in California, Clottey battled Gutierrez in an end-to-end fight that augmented the Ghanaian boxer’s image within the boxing fraternity.

The former IBF champion argues that despite winning by majority decision, it was his most difficult fight. After the fight with the Colombian, Clottey claimed that his ribs were so severely broken that he was unable to cough and even urinated blood.

He shared his experience on Joy News’ Prime Take by saying, “My most challenging fight was against [Richard] Gutierez; it was Gutierrez, not [Antonio] Margarito, not Miguel Cotto.”

“After the fight, my injured ribs prevented me from coughing.” He worked incredibly hard on me. He punched me so hard that, when I returned to my hotel, I had peed pure red blood.

Joshua Clottey is a Ghanaian former professional boxer who competed from 1995 to 2019 and held the IBF welterweight title from 2008 to 2009. As an amateur, he competed at the 1994 Commonwealth Games. At the peak of his career, he was notable for his exceptionally durable chin and was never stopped in any of his five losses.

By winning his first twenty fights, including 14 by knockout, Clottey rose to prominence. His performance qualified him to face Carlos Baldomir, who was defending his WBC world welterweight championship.

Up until the tenth round, when he was penalised two points for a deliberate headbutt, Clottey was leading. Clottey was eliminated following another head-on collision.
