The Electoral Commission has stated that it has nothing to do with the reported conflict between the Agona West Constituency Organiser of the New Patriotic Party and a member of the NDC’s Communications team in the constituency over the ongoing limited voters’ registration exercise.
The media had reported that during the limited voters’ registration exercise, the NPP organiser, Sam Toys, injured a member of the NDC with a cutlass. Following the chaos between the two parties at the Electoral Commission’s Agona West office in the Central Region, the unnamed NDC member was said to be in critical condition.
In an interview with Adom News, Samuel Ametepey, the NDC’s deputy organiser in the constituency and an alleged eyewitness to the incident, voiced his disappointment and placed blame on the EC.
However, the EC clarified in a statement posted by its Twitter account on Tuesday, September 19, 2023, that the incident did not occur at its district office. The statement explained that the incident in question took place four hours after the district office in Agona West had closed for the registration of the EC.
In a statement signed by acting Head of Public Affairs Michael Boadu, the EC stated that the report submitted by the Daily Graphic and the Daily Guide should be disregarded as false. Furthermore, it insisted that both outlets retract the reporting of the story.
“The Commission has noted calculated attempts by sections of the society to tarnish its image and credibility. This false allegation gives credence to this pattern,” parts of the statement reads.
“Our officers nationwide have been well trained and are carrying out their duties professionally. They will not act in a way as to cause confusion/violence. We call on the public to ignore the news item and urge The Daily Guide and The Daily Graphic to retract this erroneous story.”
The director of communication for the Agona West NPP, Isaac Somuah, has denied the accusations made against his organization.
“Toys did not hit the victim’s head with GoTa. Zion’s account is false; he was not present… It was a fight between the two people and they both crashed into a car’s bonnet. That is how come his head hit something and resulted in the wound… Toys also fell from the car onto the floor, and they were separated,” Mr. Somuah said.
