Electoral Commission Withdraws From NDC Primaries Due To Legal Challenges

The chair of the Electoral Commission has stated that the decision was made so that the commission would not be criticised for contempt.

“In order that we are not cited for contempt, the Commission has taken the decision not to supervise the conduct of the presidential and parliamentary elections until after the determination of the case by the court.” According to Citinewsroom.com, Jean Mensa said this on May 10 during a meeting.

Dr. Kwabena Duffour, a candidate for the National Democratic Congress presidency and the National Assembly, filed for an interlocutory injunction against the party’s forthcoming primaries, which are scheduled for May 13.

There are a number of defendants in the lawsuit. John Dramani Mahama, Kojo Bonsu, and the NDC’s General Secretary and Director of Elections Directorate are all vying for the party’s candidature for president.

In order to comply with the writ, the defendants must make their presence known in court within eight days of being served. The writ stipulated that failure to comply with the order could result in a decision being issued in their absence without further notice.

Meanwhile, National Democratic Congress (NDC) Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketia has promised that the party’s next parliamentary and presidential elections will go ahead without any problems. He stated that there was nothing that could stop the polls from happening and urged anyone with concerns to bring them to the attention of party officials.
