Mohammed Kudus has found himself in the middle of controversy after being sent off for the first time in his Premier League career during West Ham United’s 4-1 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur.
The moment that changed the game for Kudus came when he struck Spurs players Micky Van De Ven and Pape Sarr in the face during a heated altercation.
Initially shown a yellow card, the decision was overturned following a VAR review, and Kudus was given a straight red card, a decision that has put him on the sidelines for what could be a lengthy period.
What began as a typical caution soon escalated into something far more severe. Receiving a straight red card means that Kudus will miss West Ham’s upcoming matches against Manchester United, Nottingham Forest, and Everton.
However, according to former Premier League referee Mike Dean, the suspension could extend well beyond these three games. Speaking on Sky Sports, Dean suggested that Kudus might face a six-game ban due to retrospective action by the FA.
Dean explained that, because Kudus struck two different players during the altercation, he could face punishment for both offenses.
“He should get done twice in my opinion because he’s hit two different players in the face on two occasions,” Dean remarked, hinting that Kudus might not return until December.
If this extended ban is confirmed, it would see Kudus unavailable for West Ham until their December 9th clash with Wolverhampton Wanderers, a crucial stretch of the season for a team aiming to compete at the highest levels in the Premier League.
The absence of Kudus, one of West Ham’s most dynamic players, could have a significant impact on the club’s performance in the coming weeks. His contributions since joining the team have been invaluable, and losing him at this point could create a void that may be hard to fill.
This red card marks a significant shift in Kudus’ Premier League journey. The young midfielder, who has been a standout player both for West Ham and the Ghana national team, has never before faced such disciplinary action in his career.
Kudus has built a reputation for his technical skill, composure, and goal-scoring ability, making this moment seem uncharacteristic. The pressure of the Premier League, however, is relentless, and in a heated game like the one against Tottenham, even the best players can let emotions get the better of them.
