A respected academic from the University of Ghana, Prof. Akosua Adomako Ampofo has raised serious concerns about the challenges parents and students face under Ghana’s Free Senior High School (SHS) policy.
Speaking on JoyNews’ Newsfile, she painted a troubling picture of how some parents must send food to their children in schools, not only for their own kids but also for others whose families are unable to afford the cost of feeding.

She also questioned the government’s delayed release of WASSCE results, attributing the issue to unpaid debts owed to the West African Examinations Council (WAEC).
“If the government claims our revenue figures are as impressive as reported, why hasn’t this debt been cleared? Why are students and their academic futures being disrupted?” Prof. Ampofo asked pointedly.
Turning her attention to higher education, she expressed skepticism about promises made by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to provide free university education for first-year students.
“The government pays subsidies and salaries to universities, but where will the funds come from to support millions of new entrants under this policy?” she queried.
Prof. Ampofo also addressed another pressing issue: sexual harassment and abuse within educational institutions.

“Research shows that sexual harassment and even rape are widespread in both secondary and junior high schools.
“Too often, these cases are swept under the carpet or resolved informally. We need bold interventions and resources to tackle these problems head-on,” she emphasized.
