Veteran Hiplife musician and on-air personality Mzbel has voiced her concerns about the challenges facing Ghana’s Free Senior High School (Free SHS) initiative, describing its implementation as flawed and burdensome for parents.
Speaking during an interview on Neat FM, the outspoken entertainer did not mince words as she delved into her personal experiences and frustrations with the current educational system.
“The quality of the Free SHS initiative is not good. Children go to school for a short while and then come home for long periods,” she lamented.
“As parents, we can’t leave them idle at home, so eventually, you have to register them for extra classes. This means the Free SHS is not even free.”

Mzbel’s critique is one echoed by many parents who have had to grapple with the program’s implementation.
While the initiative has increased access to secondary education since its introduction, complaints about overcrowded classrooms, shortened academic calendars, and logistical challenges have been persistent.
The mother of one recounted her struggles as a parent navigating these obstacles. “It’s not easy. When the kids are home, they become restless, and you’re forced to pay for extra classes just so they don’t fall behind academically. This defeats the whole purpose of the program being ‘free.’”
When asked about potential solutions, Mzbel expressed scepticism about the current administration’s commitment to resolving these issues. “The government says they will work on it, but we haven’t seen anything,” she said.
However, she expressed optimism about the prospect of change under a different leadership.
“I’m confident that when John Mahama comes into power, the program will be revised and made better,” she said, underscoring her belief in the former president’s capacity to improve the educational landscape.
