Chris Hughton, the coach of the Black Stars, has announced a 25-man squad for Ghana’s upcoming match against the Central African Republic (CAR) in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.

Despite Andre Ayew’s current lack of club affiliation, he has been unexpectedly invited to join the team, while deputy captain Thomas Partey has been excluded due to injury.

According to a statement from the Ghana Football Association, team doctor Prince Pambo has confirmed that Partey suffered a groin injury during training on August 31, 2023, and is expected to be out for several weeks, as predicted by his club doctors.

The squad also includes the return of several players, such as Gideon Mensah and Elisha Owusu from Auxerre, Baba Iddrisu from Mallorca, and Inaki Williams, Antoine Semenyo, and Richard Ofori, among others.

Medeama SC striker Jonathan Sowah has earned his debut call-up, becoming the second local-based player to receive an invitation under Chris Hughton, following former Bechem United striker Hafiz Konkoni.

German-based defender Stephan Ambrosius has also been selected for the crucial encounter. The players are expected to arrive in Ghana on Monday to begin preparations for the match, which is scheduled for Thursday, September 7, 2023, at the Baba Yara Stadium. Ghana must avoid defeat to qualify for the 2023 AFCON, which will be held in Ivory Coast next year.
