Onana Retires From Cameroon Duty After He Clashed With Song At World Cup

Cameroon goalkeeper, Andre Onana has declared his retirement from international competition.

His unexpected decision, albeit not surprising to a cross-section of football fans, comes on the heels of his much-publicized altercation in the locker room with head coach Rigobert Song leading to his expulsion from the Cameroon camp in Doha at the World Cup last month.

Following the altercation with Song, the goalkeeper, who took part in Cameroon’s opening match against Switzerland in Qatar, abruptly left the Indomitable Lions camp.

“Every story, however beautiful it may be, has its end. And my story with the Cameroonian national team has come to an end,” Onana said.

The 26-year-old further said that players come and go, “but Cameroon comes before any person or player.”

He said Cameroon remains eternal and so does his love for the national team and for the people who have always supported him no matter how difficult the moment was.

“I will continue to support (the national team) as a fan, just as the more than 27 million Cameroonians do during every match,” Onana stated, before thanking all those who trusted and believed that he could add and contribute to the team.
