NSA Boss Provides Update on Baba Yara Sports Stadium Readiness for Upcoming Match Against Sudan

Seth Panwum, the Board Chairman of the National Sports Authority (NSA), has addressed concerns regarding the readiness of the Baba Yara Sports Stadium to host Ghana’s forthcoming match against Sudan.

Speaking during a session with the Parliamentary Select Committee on Youth, Sports, and Culture on September 25, Panwum confirmed that the stadium is currently 70% prepared for the event.

In his remarks, Panwum acknowledged the Confederation of African Football’s (CAF) assessment, which indicated the necessity for extensive work on the pitch.

“We have acknowledged this and are currently addressing the issues,” he stated, expressing hope that, at the current pace of improvements, CAF may allow the stadium to be used for the upcoming match.

However, he highlighted a crucial regulatory requirement: the NSA must provide CAF with an update on the pitch’s status before formally requesting a reassessment and approval for its use.

“It’s regrettable that we’ve reached this point,” Panwum added, emphasizing the challenges faced in maintaining the stadium’s conditions.

Panwum also touched on the financial pressures the NSA is facing, pointing out the importance of generating revenue through gate receipts.

He explained that while it’s common practice in other countries, like Wembley, to hold concerts while protecting the pitch with covers, the situation in Ghana remains complex.

He mentioned discussions with the Minister of Finance through the Sector Minister regarding the urgency of securing financial assistance to address these challenges.

With the match against Sudan approaching, the focus remains on ensuring that the Baba Yara Sports Stadium meets the necessary standards, balancing both the sporting and financial aspects critical to its success.

Panwum’s update serves to reassure stakeholders of the NSA’s commitment to resolving the issues and providing a suitable venue for the upcoming match.
