NPP Must Prove To Ghanaians Why They Deserve To ‘Break The 8’

Former chairman of the National Peace Council, Rev. Prof. Emmanuel Asante, has asked the NPP government of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to explain to Ghanaians why they should be re-elected in 2024.

He has also questioned the necessity of the National Democratic Congress’s (NDC) return to the government.

In an interview with JoyNews, the former head of the Methodist Church in Ghana criticised the current ruling NPP government, saying, “The NPP is currently ruling, and you say you will break the 8. They need to tell Ghanaians why they should be allowed. We also have the NDC trying to come back. They believe that because they have been in power before, they can come back again. They should also tell Ghanaians why they should be allowed to come back.

Prof. Asante, speaking about the lofty promises politicians make to Ghanaians, said it has been the practise of Ghanaian politicians to make such promises despite the fact that they are aware they cannot be fulfilled.

“How do you promise that you will create a sea for the people of Ashanti Region when you know that is not possible? It is important to be truthful to the people,” he added.

He urged both the NPP and NDC to act in the country’s best interest rather than their own.

Since the beginning of the Fourth Republic in 1992, every eight years, power has shifted between the NPP and the NDC. Before the 2024 election, the NPP established a goal known as “breaking the 8” to end the curse and remain in power. Prof. Asante, on the other hand, thinks the NPP needs to win over the Ghanaian people in order to “break the 8.”
