Not Everyone Can Be a Fan- Sally Mann reminds Shatta Wale

In a recent interview on Joy Prime, outspoken entertainment critic and radio personality Sally Mann, with nearly two decades in the industry, took a bold stance on criticism and transparency within Ghana’s entertainment landscape.

Her comments shed light on her long-standing commitment to speaking truth to power, even as she navigates the complex dynamics of fame and fan culture.

Sally, known for her candid takes on entertainment issues, did not hold back in her remarks, particularly when addressing the vocal support base of Ghanaian dancehall artist Shatta Wale. “I’ve been in the industry for 18 years, and I know the way I am an audio person, people are equally audio,” she said, using “audio” to describe a culture of exaggerated online engagement that often fails to translate into real-life actions.

“When people say SM, and Ashaiman fans, I also see them as audio people—they loud it on the internet and it ends there,” she added, referring to Shatta Movement (SM) fans and the Ashaiman-based supporters associated with the artist.

Sally dismissed the idea that her critical opinions might put her at risk of retaliation, despite some fears raised by others in the industry. “I do not think Shatta Wale would send someone after my life because I criticized him,” she asserted, suggesting that the artist’s fan base, while highly engaged online, may not pose a real threat.

This exchange speaks to a larger trend of Ghanaian entertainment personalities grappling with the fervent loyalty of fan bases.

Artists like Shatta Wale, with an intense following, often face a dilemma: fan enthusiasm can boost their brand, but it also brings scrutiny when criticism is met with backlash. Sally’s remarks reflect her confidence in her role as an industry critic and her commitment to maintaining integrity amid shifting loyalties in the entertainment world.

“So we need people who can criticize people in the industry. We all can’t be licking people’s feet,” Sally continued. “We should have people who can tell the truth as it is, and I am glad I am part of those people.”

Sally’s stance may resonate with others who feel a need for constructive criticism to help drive the industry forward. She believes that this level of honesty, often uncomfortable, is essential for growth.

“People keep asking, ‘Who am I?’ I am a nobody, but I have the platform they don’t,” she stated. This declaration emphasizes her belief that one doesn’t need to be a celebrity to have a valid perspective—sometimes, it’s those who operate behind the scenes who hold the industry accountable.
