Newcastle United Remembers Christian Atsu’s Goal, Assist Against West Ham In 2017

One of Christian Atsu’s best games for Newcastle United has been shared on the club’s official Twitter platform to eulogise him.

Christian Atsu contributed an assist and a goal as Newcastle rallied from a goal down to defeat West Ham 3-2 in a Premier League game which also featured Atsu’s international teammate and skipper of the Black Stars Dede Ayew.

Prior to netting the game-winning goal, Atsu first assisted in the creation of Newcastle’s second goal. For Newcastle’s second goal, Christian Atsu received on the left wing and swung past Zabelata to set up Diame. When Newcastle had a two-goal lead, Atsu added his name to the score sheet by capping off a superb counterattack.

West Ham’s Andre Ayew scored with seconds remaining to make the score 3-2 after he had missed a penalty kick. From 2016 to 2021, Christian Atsu played for Newcastle and made over 100 appearances for the Magpies.

Following the tragic earthquake that struck Turkey and Syria on Monday, February 6, the former Premier League player, who played for both Newcastle United and Chelsea, went missing.

Twelve days later, his body was found and this brought sorrowful confirmation of the terrible news by his agent who was providing updates about the player since conflicting reports about his whereabouts dominated tabloids across the world.

Only hours before the tragic incident took place, he scored a last-second winner for his current club Hatayspor against Turkish Super Lig rivals Kasimpasa on February 5 at home. Atsu joined the Turkish side in September of last year and was in Antakya at the time of earlier this month’s earthquake.

His agent, Nana Sechere, said: “It is with the heaviest of hearts that I have to announce to all well-wishers that sadly Christian Atsu’s body was recovered this morning My deepest condolences go to his family and loved ones. I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their prayers and support.

“I ask that whilst we make the necessary arrangements, everyone would please respect the privacy of the family during this very difficult time.”
