Sulley Muntari has questioned the Ghana Football Association’s decision to hand Mohammed Kudus the Black Stars captaincy, arguing that while the West Ham midfielder has natural leadership qualities, the move was rushed.
Kudus, 24, was given the armband in October 2024 after Thomas Partey’s injury ruled him out of Ghana’s AFCON 2026 qualifiers against Sudan.
Despite his individual brilliance, Ghana failed to qualify for the tournament, further fueling debate over his leadership appointment.

For Muntari, there’s no doubt Kudus will eventually captain the national team, but he believes leadership should come naturally rather than be forced.
“Kudus, no matter what, is going to be the captain of the national team one day,” he said.
“Let it be smooth for him, don’t just rush him. He doesn’t need the armband, but he commands on the field. He carries the whole nation on his shoulders and plays with us.”
With the Black Stars now turning their focus to the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers in March 2024, the debate over Kudus’ captaincy will likely continue as Ghana looks to rebuild after their AFCON disappointment.
