Ghanaian playmaker Mohammed Kudus may not be able to participate in Ghana’s crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Comoros on Tuesday, November 21, 2023.
According to a report, Kudus was absent from the Black Stars’ final training session on Monday due to an injury. The influential West Ham player has been experiencing persistent back problems and will undergo a late fitness test to determine if he can play in the match.
This setback adds to the growing list of injuries that have affected Ghana’s national team in recent months. Notably, Thomas Partey, Daniel-Kofi Kyereh, Mohammed Salisu, Alexander Djiku, and Tariq Lamptey are all currently sidelined due to injuries.
Additionally, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) announced that defender Daniel Amartey will also miss the upcoming game against Comoros.
Amartey, who started the previous match against Madagascar but was substituted in the second half, failed a late fitness test and will not be available for Tuesday’s important World Cup qualifier.
In the meantime, if Ghana manages to defeat the Comoros in their own backyard, they will rise to the top of the group. This would mark their second consecutive victory in the qualifiers after Mali drew against the Central African Republic in their home game.
The previous encounter between Ghana and Comoros took place during the last edition of the AFCON tournament. Unfortunately, the four-time African champions were eliminated from the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) after a surprising 3-2 loss to Comoros on the final day of group C matches.
El Fardou Ben Mohamed scored Comoros’ first-ever goal in the continental tournament, followed by Ahmed Mogni adding a second goal just after the hour mark for the debutants on Tuesday. Despite goals from Richmond Boakye and Alexander Djiku that brought Ghana back into the game, Mogni secured a winning goal for the island nation with only five minutes remaining.
That was the first time in Ghana’s history that they failed to win at least one group match, despite their previous 22 successful visits to the tournament. Their chances were further hindered in Garoua when they were reduced to 10 men for 65 minutes due to an early red card given to their lead striker, Andre Ayew.
