Days after Pele’s death shook the foundation of world football, another loss within the fraternity has been recorded as former Cameroon midfielder Modeste M’bami died following a cardiac arrest at his home in Le Havre, France on Saturday.

According to Goal, the 2000 Olympic gold medalist died of a heart attack in Le Havre, where he had been residing since his retirement from football in 2015.

He was 40 years old. Although his former teams have sent condolence messages, no other information has been released regarding the loss of the midfielder who played for Marseille, Paris Saint-Germain, Le Havre, and Almeria.

When the Indomitable Lions won the gold medal at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia, M’bami will be best known for his Golden Goal against Brazil in the quarterfinals.

“PSG [are] in mourning. Modeste Mbami has just left us, at the age of 40, after succumbing to a heart attack,” PSG said on Twitter.

Mbami won the French Cup twice with PSG in 2004 and 2006 as well as the King’s Cup in Saudi Arabia with A-Ittihad in 2013.
